Marriage

What do I need to keep my credit history (report) separate from someone I'm about to marry? I don't want her bad credit to become my bad credit

Re: Marriage

Certainly don't convert any individual accounts she has that may have reported delinquent payments to joint accounts. E.g., if she's got a credit card account that has historically been past due and reported this to the credit agencies, don't join the account.

If any collection agencies call you on debts written off by the creditors, don't agree to pay or settle with them yourself -- leave that your wife.

If there are creditors with claims against your wife, don't convert your bank accounts to joint as that may open up your funds to pay your wife's judgments.

Going forward, make sure any joint credit accounts you own stay current.
