Mother does not have to change primary residence or legal status of son. If the son is going to live with Dad for a year, you need something in writing that both you and dad sign that says: (i) you do not give up your right to primary physical custody or joint custody, (ii) the living situation with your son is for one year only and is not a permanent living situation, (iii) the son will be returned to Maryland immediately upon the end of the one year. Best of luck.
