Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Are parents legally responsible for adult children

If your child is 18 and has an accident or is somehow responsilbe for inqury to another, can his parents be sued sucessfully?

If the child is in college does that make the parent responsible until he is 21 of even older?

Thank You

Re: Are parents legally responsible for adult children

An 18-year old is an adult and therefore the parents cannot be sued on the basis of the child's status as such. In MD, unless the child, at the time of the accident, was acting as the parent's agent--meaning he/she was performing a service for the parent, the parent isn't legally responsible for the accident. In DC, the owner of the vehicle is responsible if the driver was operating with the owner's permission. Of course, if the child is a covered insured under your auto liability policy, the insurer should be protecting the child through the policy.
