witness jurisdiction

friend getting divorced in MD. I may be called as witness, but live out of state. Do I have to appear, if served?

If you are served within MD, the subpoena is valid; otherwise it cannot be enforced by the MD court. Your friend could come to your state and seek a subpoena from a local court to take your deposition so s/he can use your testimony at the divorce hearing. Or if you want to cooperate, you could agree to give deposition testimony in your area for that purpose.
