Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Engagement Ring

My ex-fiance is taking me to court for my engagement ring. The engagement was ended 2 years ago. The reason the engagement was ended was because he got another girl pregnant. Who gets the ring?

Re: Engagement Ring

Generally speaking, the engagement ring is considered to be a gift from the man to the woman and therefore not returnable. There have been exceptions, such as where the woman breaks off the engagement and is held to have duped or defrauded the man, but these clearly don't apply to you. There is no cause of action for breach of promise to marry, and that would be the only basis on which your ex-fiance could legally get the ring back.
