Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

karate school contract

I signed a 3 yr. contract for a karate school. 1 year remains, however, due to finances I am unable to continue class and would like to terminate contract. They say I can't. Can I stop the direct withdraw from my bank ($124 1x month) without the school filing suit against me? Please advise,

thank you.

Re: karate school contract

If part of your contract was the direct withdrawal for payment, they can sue you for breach of contract or turn the matter over to a collection agency. Even if it wasn't specifically part of the contract, if you terminate the automatic withdrawal plan and don't make the monthly payments, they will file a collection action against you. Maybe they would consider suspending your membership for a period of time to give you the opportunity of getting your finances together so that you can resume and complete the contract. Assuming that's a viable option for you.
