Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

sitter won't return my pet dog

I go out of town frequently, the woman that I dated for about a month suggested I leave the dog with her to watch and take to the vet while I was gone. Since being back about 2 to 3 wks now she has refused to give back my pet. I purchased the dog back in Jan 06, I started to see her in Apr 06, Since I broke off the relationship, she claims that I gave the dog as a gift. That is flat out lie. She is a public defender and claims I can do nothing. Please help!
