Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

How do I get a title for an abandoned vehicle?

My husband left me a car (over a year ago) which was registered in his name and a banks name. He paid 6k of 8k that he owed on the car and did not make another payment for 5 years. When he called the bank to have them pick the car up, they said they did not want the vehicle. The vehicle has not been registered in three years and is inoperable. I cannot even get a junk yard to take the car w/out a title. The car was registered in Colorado and now is in MD (unregistered). I have called the bank and they have no records on the car at all. Is there a process to claim ''abandoned'' vehicles?

You will need to prepare information that the lien has been released and no claim to the vehicle exists. Options exist should you want to retrieve the vehicle. Although it appears that it would not be a good decision to pursue the vehicle given that many used vehicles are available, it is your decision. Also note that many used cars are being sold that have experienced flood damage. Essentially the buyer (or person to acquire title in your case) is to beware. You may be compromising other matters with your attempt to assume the vehicle. Much of your decision is based upon the value of the vehicle and whether such decision is advisable. Contact an attorney to discuss your legal issues.
