Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

Conflict of Interest Policy

The Company that I work for is MAKING us sign the Conflict of Interest Policy. And I agree with most of the policy. But there is one thing that I don't agree with."No employees shall engage in or accept outside employment or render services for another unless this outside employment or service is approved in advance and in writing by the Company". It seems to me that they are controlling my life, by telling me what I can and can't do. It also seems that my rights are being violated. I have been with this Company for 4 years and they are just bringing this up. What I want to know is, am I right or should I sign it?

Conflict of Interest Policy: reasonable?

The reasonableness of such a provision woulddepend on the type of job you have. But it isprobably enforceable if you sign, and unless you have a contract (or collective bargainingagreement), they can probably fire you if yourefuse to sign. So reasonableness may not bethe issue. If it's a small company or you are important enough, they might be willingto negotiate. See a lawyer who may be able toadvise you further on your rights, as some states' laws may vary.
