generally speaking, you can't get it postponed or cancelled unless you pay the rent that is owed.

Question: has there already been a hearing? are you talking about postponing the eviction hearing? or are youtalking about postponing the eviction after a hearing has been held.

If there has already been a hearing, the only way to postpone the eviction would be to file a timely appeal and pay the rent to the court. Otherwise, pay the landlord in full.

If there has not yet been a hearing, the only way to postpone the hearing, will be if there are serious problems with the unit, and you file a rent escrow action and seek a rent abatement -- that will require you to pay rent into the court -- so you'll still have to pay rent. And if you lose you will eventually have to pay the back rent too.
