Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Maryland

Sueing An Apartment Complex

My fiance and her friend were car jacked in our apartment complex parking lot. Do we have any legal ground to sue the complex? Lighting in the parking lot is not that bright.Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Sueing An Apartment Complex

First, refer to you lease for any duties the landlord has taken on regarding your security. Outside of the existence of such language in the lease, you may not have much of an argument. You will have to show that the complex had a duty to protect against potential carjackers; that the duty was breached; that the failure of the complex to provide adequate lighting was the proximate and legal cause of the carjacking and that there were damages flowing from the breach.
