Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland

Assaulted & Hospitalized: Do I need a lawyer?

My husband was assaulted in his own back yard by 5 people. 4 were caught already. 3 were juveniles, 1 adult. He was in the hospital for 4 day's. Broken jaw wired shut, 6 staples in the back of his head were they smashed bricks over it. Also used on the left side of his face. He will not be able to work for 5-7 week's. The State's Attorney said it is out of our hands now. Police say it was an isolated inccident and we shouldn't be scared to go home even though that is were it happened! Do I need to get a lawyer to represent my husband? We never had to experience anything like this before. Scared and need help!

Please help!

Re: Assaulted & Hospitalized: Do I need a lawyer?

You didn't specify why you wanted a lawyer. The government will prosecute the perpetrators for their criminal conduct against your husband; you don't need a lawyer for that. If they are convicted, they may be required to pay your husband's medical bills if you aren't insured as part of their sentence (known as restitution).

Your husband also has a claim for civil damages against the perpetrators. However, while his claim may be good "on paper", if the people who caused his injuries do not have significant financial resources, it's unlikely he would recover any money even if he obtained a judgment in court.
