Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

"citizens rights relative to iminent domain"

In our neighborhood, the county government has decided to build a major 4 lane highway. This would effectively end the community as we know it. It would require the removal of homes, two large forest areas, and bring the highway to within 50 feet of the remaining homes. The construction of this road would considerably diminish the property values of the homes that remain in the neighborhood and drasticly reduce the quality of life. The proposed 80 feet right-of-way would interfere greatly with religous services at the community church, by introducing high levels of noise and traffic.

My question is, " What can homeowners do to stop such developments? "
