If a friend allows someone to live with them and did not want any rent at the time and now after they moved out, can they be taken to court for back rent? No written or verbal agreement about any payment

No. The person would be considered a guest without any right to stay for any pre-determined length of time which is a lot different than a rent paying tenant.
