Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

Landlord seeks back rent

Six years (1995) ago I moved out of a property and submitted the required 30 day written notice. The landlord claimed I submitted only a 28 day notice and sought a whole months rent. I sent letters proving I sent proper notification and I provided my forwarding address. I have not heard from them since. This year on Feb. 10 I moved into another property the management company owns and have just received a collection letter dated March 22 for the rent they claim is due from 6 years ago. This management company did a thorough background check and never said anything about back rent prior to me moving into my current residence. I do not have my original letters and need to know how I can prove my case.

Re: Landlord seeks back rent

If the landlord did not file suit and obtain judgment it may be too late for the landlord to collect from you. The statute of limitations in Maryland is generally 3 years. However, more detail about your facts are required in order for a conclusive opinion to be formed. You should contact an attorney for some advice before taking any further action.
