Legal Question in Social Security Law in Maryland

overpayment of social security 24 yrs ago

in 1984 i was receiving ss for myself and minor child due to husband death. ss said they overpaid me and i filled out necessary papers. I haven't heard from them again until recently. They are collecting the overpayment from my ss now of 2200 dollars. can they do this

It would be helpful to know what "necessary papers" you completed 24 years ago. If you completed a Reconsideration and/or a Waiver, you should have received something in writing explaining the SSA's decision before it began taking from your benefit.

Get all of your papers together and go to your local SSA office. If they do not help you understand what happened contact an attorney.
