Creditors Claims against Estate
My mother died without a will. Her estate was established with myself and my two brothers (her only surviving family members) as co-executors. She had six outstanding credit card balances (solely in her name) totaling approximately 600.00. Once these creditors have been notified of her death, must they then forfeit the balances owed, or can they still file claims against her estate? Thank you for any assistance you can provide in this matter.

In Maryland (as in most states), creditors have a right to be paid from the assets of an estate, before the heirs inherit from the estate. There may be some property that is not part of the estate, however, such as real estate that is owned as joint tenants with right of survivorship, and life insurance proceeds.
