The personal representative should promptly petition to open up an estate as soon as possible after death. While there is no specific deadline it should be as soon as reasonably possible after death. (The law imposes various time lines for creditors to assert claims, for accountings to be filed and so forth).

If the personal representative is unsure about how to open up or administer an estate or simply wants some assistance they would benefit from speaking with an estate attorney. If the person named in the will does not want to serve as PR another family member may petition for appointment. My firm offers a no cost initial consultation of up to 10 minutes (by calling 410-216-7000) or the PR could contact another Maryland attorney of their choosing.
