How legal is a non-compete agreement in Massachusetts for a service company?

Non-competes are generally enforceable within certain limitations under Massachusetts law. However, they must be reasonable in scope and duration relative to the position. They also must be signed at the beginning of employment unless they are part of a promotion or there is real consideration provided -- keeping your job is not consideration.
