Legal Question in Consumer Law in Massachusetts

I am involved in a dispute over my college transcripts. The college I attended over ten years ago is claiming that I owe them for classes I supposedly withdrew from late. This is not true and I am just learning of this now after all this time. I requested that they provide me with documentation to prove this is a valid debt and was told that they no longer have any proof that I owe this money but will not release the transcripts to me until the debt is paid. They released them to my previous school last year and I was able to obtain my degree with the credits that they transferred. I believe that this is a mistake on their part but they are unwilling to work with me. Can they legally hold my transcripts for a debt that they have no way of proving I owe?

This is not uncommon. Usually this depends on the nature of their rules and regulations, which should be available to you.

You should seek all information and regulations to support their denial of transcript and to support the claim against you.
