Legal Question in Immigration Law in Massachusetts

U.S. citizen getting married to a Filipino Citizen. What are the legal procedure

I am going to get married to a Filipino citizen but do not know where to start with the legal process. She is currently working here in the U.S with an H1-B visa. We plan to get married in about a year and a half. I have heard that I should start early becuase the process is quite long. Is there a specific page on the internet that can help me with this or give me more info? I have been searching for a while but have not found anything.

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. There's not much you can do at this stage other than start assembling the documents you will need (i.e. your birth certificate, your spouse's birth certificate & translation if applicable; any prior divorce judgments for either one of you). Make sure that should your wife's H-1 visa expire prior to your marriage you file to renew it. You will be filing both a Form I-130 and Form I-485 after the marriage which essentially is a two step process: The I-130 shows your wife is entitled to immediate relative status; the Form I-485 says, Immigration please change her status to permanent resident. There is a ton of other papers you will need. If you visit the following website:

http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/lawsregs/index.htm

you'll find what you need on forms, addresses for the INS office with jurisdiction in your area, etc. Good luck and congrats again.
