Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Massachusetts

selling prints of famous works of art

I would like to create cards with pictures of famous paintings on the front. These cards would be printed and sold commercially. How do I know which images I can use? If an image is royalty free, does that mean I can use it for this purpose?

Re: selling prints of famous works of art

the prints you are seeking to use are potentially copyrighted art. the royalty-free terms depend on the exact terms of the owner's permission to use. Frankly, I would be above-board and contact the owner of the copyright on the PRINT and make a deal.

By the way, your only way to REALLY avoid this is to take a photo of the art yourself and use THAT, assuming that the art itself is now in the public domain. If the art itself is not in the public domain, you may have difficulties.
