potential employers asking to see past W2 form

At time of hire, is it legal for a potential employer to request a copy of your past W2 form or most recent paycheck?

If the inquiry is to determine your financial record and that inquiry is related to the job you are applying for, it is probably ok. If employer is checking your prior salary, it is probably ok. The only potential wrong I can see is a possible invasion of privacy. If a job offer has already been made, these inquiries are ok.

I am note sure it is illegal, but it is certainly peculiar. I would want to know specifically the reason for the request, and what is to be done, assuming the information would be provided.
