Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

Supervisor lied to get me fired.

I was working for a large media company in Boston, MA as a technical analyst. When I was hired, i was given the hours of 9-5. about a month and a half after I started, my supervisor (who works in NY) told me that I had to change my hours to either 8-5 or 9-6, adding an extra hour to my day. I told her that this would be hard for me to do since my girlfriend works nights and we have a baby and only one car. She said it didn't matter, and I had to choose one shift. I went to the VP of human resources for advice. He told me to send an email to the VP of IT, my supervisor's boss, and explain my situation. I did and he replied that I could keep my hours. A couple of days later I got a call from my supervisor telling me that I shouldn't have done that and that I should have gone to her. A couple of weeks passed and last week I go into work and get called into the VP of human resources' office. He tells me that they are letting me go, and hands me a report written up by my supervisor. When I read it, everything in there was lies. She said I called in sick 6 times, and it was only 3. She also had many lies about my performance and made up situations that did not happen. I can disprove just about everything she wrote. Do I have a case?

Re: Supervisor lied to get me fired.

Generally most people who work are employees at will. This means that an employer may fire an employee for a good reason,a bad reason or no reason at all.

There are however laws that limit employers in terminating employees. If the termination is motivated by a discriminatory intent (i.e. sex, race, religion) such action is prohibited by state and federal law.

I can not determine based on your posting whether you have a "case." If you want to review this matter further I would be happy to talk with you. You can call my office.
