What is the purpose of appointing a guardian ad litem

What would be the reason for a guardian being appointed to settle an estate when the bulk of the estate has already been disbursed?

It would be highly unusual for a guardian to be appointed to have anything to do with an estate unless one of the principals is either a minor or an incompetent.
