Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts

I just recieved notice that my landlords are raising the rent, but they are also asking me for two previous months worth of this rent increase stating that the actual increase started two months ago. But they failed to in form me of this until today. Can they do this? Is this legal? Can they charge back-rent like that without informing me first?

I am assuming this is a residential lease, if not this answer may not apply. The answer is on a residential lease they cannot raise your rent retroactively. In fact they need to give you at least 30 days notice of a rent increase, assuming you are now on a month to month rental agreement.

Commercial leases work differently.
