Legal Question in Technology Law in Michigan

spyware and unapproved automatic programs downloaded onto your harddrive

A certain web site/provider automatically downloads its search engine and various other programs onto my harddrive when clicking on certain sites and there is no prior warning as to this happening. You never know which site this is going to happen to and it takes a small miracle to remove all of the programs from your harddrive. How is this legal? If people are being prosecuted for spam, how can others get away with automatic, unapproved programs downloaded onto your computer? Is this not a breach of my privacy?

It's unpleasant, but probably not illegal. When you use the site, you are probably required to consent. No on ever reads the fine print, but chances are this intrusion IS in the fine print. You MAY have to wipe your harddrive, but there are software tools ( not to mention registry cleaners) that should get rid of it. If you look in task mananger and find something you don't know, simply google it and you can easily see if it is part of a normal program or spyware.
