premarrital debt

If I marry a woman with $3-4000 outstanding debt do I automatically assume her debt and leagal responsibility for the debt?

No, you do not assume someone's debt simply because you marry them. However, if you open any credit cards as "joint" with your wife, or any other person, you are responsible for the entire amount of the debt if the other person fails to pay, or files bankruptcy, and not just half or your share of what you charged.
