Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Malicious Destruction of Private Property

I have not been charged yet but a man is claiming I keyed his car. The mark not very large and I estimate should cost less than $1000 to fix. The man claims he saw me do it but that is impossible as I did not do it. I don't know what to do. A detective is to telephone me. It is pretty much my word against his. How do courts deal with such matters and should I get a lawyer? I don't have much money and cannot afford large lawyer fees.

You should not speak with the police without a lawyer. Of course you need to find a way to afford a lawyer. It will be much less expensive than the alternative.

Re: Malicious Destruction of Private Property

You seem to know a lot about the extent of the damage to this man's car,in which case I wouldn't

talk to anyone except a lawyer about it.

When the police call you may politely decline to speak with them since anything you say "can and will be held against you".

Nothing you can say to the police will be helpful to you unless you have an airtight alibi, which seems unlikely from your posting.
