Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

I received a phone call from my mother telling me that 3 weeks ago my son was beaten by my father with a wooden back scratcher. He left bruises all over his back and butt. My son was so bruised up that he couldn't even sit in class. The teachers saw the bruises on my son notified the authorizes. Now CPS is launching an investigation into what my father did. My father also did the same thing to me 16 years ago and he went to jail last year for 2 days for hitting a teenage girl in the head with a 2x4 and pulling a gun out on her. I'm not sure if the county still has my file on record, but could that play a factor in sending him to jail? Legally I would like to know what my options are. Can I file charges against him? Can I get a restraining order against him to not have any form of contact with my kids? Thank you for you help
