Legal Question in Education Law in Michigan

attendance/detentions

Im getting detentions for not attending a class that I dont want, have stopped attending and am failing. I dont want to serve these detentions, Im currently suspended because of that. When I go back to school theyre expecting me to go to these detentions. I need another option going to this class is a waste of time I cant pass it, I dont want it and I dont need it but the suspensions are eating into the grades of my other classes. I just want to finish this year of high school and be done with it all. Theres probably more but im already lost on what to do.

Re: attendance/detentions

You need to gather your parents and have them go with you to see the counselor at the school. Your parents need to explain that you chose a class that you can't pass. They need to let you withdraw from that class. That is likely to be a WF on the transcript, but it is better than getting Fs in all the other classes.

Next you need to explain you didn't know you had the option of withdrawing, and not knowing that, you cut what was an otherwise useless class to you. Explain that your other classes matter to you, and you want to continue to do them.

Then you agree to do a few of the detentions as a sign of good faith if they will cut them by 2/3 or so. That lets them feel like your behavior issue has been dealt with, while allowing you not to have to deal with the whole boatload of detentions.

If the counselor cannot work this out, then the next step is to see the principal with the parents. If that doesn't work, go to the Superintendent. IF that doesn't work, you can always hire legal counsel and try to do something that way.

My wife was a teacher for 25 years. Most of the time people do not realize they have the power to alter class assignments and withdraw from classes that are not working. She always advises going in and asking nicely and not rattling any sabres. The nicer you ask, the more likely you are to get what you want.

Good luck my friend,
