Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

child support/ suspended driver license

my driving privilege has been suspended in Michigan for being behind on my support since 2001. i haven't had the best record of payment history because it is hard for a grown man to find work without a license. i have worked jobs at fast food places and was barely able to afford food to pay it at times. i even lived outside at one point. i have at numerous occasions attempted to get them to re-instate my license always to no avail. my support with arrears is figured in comes to $274 a week and there is no way i can get caught up if i can't even find a decent job because i am unable to drive. especially in these times when anything that may count against in the job search is so glaring. i need a license. i understand that i got behind and i want to pay. but i need to be able to drive. its been 8 years now. enough is enough. what can i do? i am desperate. i have a wife and 7 month old daughter to care for.

Re: child support/ suspended driver license

How about going before the judge and asking for your driving privileges to be reinstated for a period of time, to allow you to find work. If you make a go of it, then the judge could consider reinstating it permanently, as long as you make payments. You also should consider a motion to lower your support if you aren't working and have those big support obligations. William S. Stern
