Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

My son is doing his own divorce using a book we bought at the bookstore with the forms in it. This is a consent divorce, so he served his wife the summons directly. She actually went to the clerk with him. I read somewhere that she should have been served by anyone other than him and that it could invalidate the divorce because of this. There is a pretrial scheduled for the Circuit Court conference room. Can he re-serve the summons? If he does, does he have to re-file or can he just re-serve it and then file that copy with the clerk? My son resides in Michigan, in Allegan County.

Your son that is doing his own divorce using a book you bought at the bookstore should read the part of the book dealing with serving a summons. If he needs legal advice, he should hire a lawyer.
