If you are suing under a breach of contract theory (which your's will most likely be considered) the statute of limitations is 6 years. If you are suing under a tort negligence theory, then the statute of limitations is 3 years. Under the circumstances you could possibly sue this 'jerk' using a breach of contract theory. You are alleging that he made certain representations and promises to perform a service in a certain way, in exchange for his promises you paid him the contracted amount and he failed to fulfill his promise to you. In reliance on that unfulfilled promise you suffered financial damages. You are also probably looking at a claim under the Michigan Consumer Protection Statute as well.
