Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

Trespassing and property damage

A relative recently purchased a parcel of land behind ours.

Although there were old fence posts and survey markings on some of the old trees along the property lines they went beyond them. They then built a road on our land and cut down some of our trees. We had to hire a surveyor to come out and put in a legel corner and run a line along the property. This cost us quite a lot of money.

When someone buys land aren't they responsible for knowing where their property lines are? These people seem to think just because they're relatives nothing should be done.

What out come could we expect if we go to court with this?

I have been looking for past court cases on this subject but

can't find any that seem to be about the same. Thankyou

Re: Trespassing and property damage

You are entitled to damages for the trespass. Most lawyers would not take this on a contingency but would require a retainer and charge by the hour. Bill Stern
