Legal Question in Juvenile Dependency in Michigan

Why would my childs probation Officer want to talk to me?

My ex wife has had custody of our youngest daughter for 3 yrs. My other two older ones live with me. The youngest got in trouble and is on probation. Now the officer wants me to travel 3 states to ''talk'' about what might be bothering my youngest whom I have no control over.

Is this normal? Doesnt make any sense when a simple phone call could do.

Of course you should not travel all that distance to "talk in person" with a child with whom you exercise little or no parental control. The cops are thinking in terms of what would have the greatest impact on changing the child's attitude. They have not factored in the stress on you traveling that distance, not to mention the cost of gasoline or flying.

Even if you are not required to appear in Michigan, maybe it would have a positive impact on your daughter. If you have not been involved in her day-to-day life, and it sounds like you have not since you do not live in the same state, the fact that you went out of your way for her may make a huge difference to her. Traveling from Tennessee to Michigan may only be a small sacrifice to make a big statement to her that you care about her.

Best wishes.
