Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

My company has just mandated a "community service" activity as part of the performance evaluation for every employee. Is it legal for them to force us to participate in community service by adding it to an employment evaluation? Thank you!!!

In general, you should be paid for all hours worked, even if the work is outside your normal job duties. If, for example, your employer says "You are required to serve food at this soup kitchen from 11 AM - 2 PM on Saturday," then you should be paid for that time.

Alternatively, whether an employee volunteers in the community is not an illegal factor to consider for the purposes of evaluations. That means your employer could legally say "We like that employee X volunteers at the animal shelter on the weekends and want to reward him for it."

Assuming your situation is somewhere in the middle of those two situations, you should probably talk to an attorney about the details of your specific concern. You can call our offices at 1-800-WAGES-10 for a free consultation regarding this issue.
