Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Apartment Damages

I moved out of my apartment 7/29 as the lease was up 7/31. The apartment was left in fair condition with some normal wear and tear (including soiled carpet near front door). I recieved an itemized list of damages mailed out on 8/31, a couple days past the 30 day deadline. The damages totaled 1506.00 including 1213.00 for carpeting. I disputed the charges in writing within 2 days and a collection agency contacted me today (9/22) with a 2 week notice to pay in full. Is this worth pursuing in court? Does the collection agency have to put the go on hold so my credit is not ruined? Please respond.

Re: Apartment Damages

It sounds like numerous landlord-tenant procedural requirements were ignored. I suggest you file suit in small claims court in the city where the apartment was located. Pick up a booklet describing landlord-tenant rights and obligations so you know how to proceed in court.
