Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Can job relocation break my lease?

My company is transfering me from Detroit, MI to Denver, CO.I have a job relocation clause in my lease that allows me to break it if this happens. The problem lies with one of the stipulations. I signed a 24 month lease, clearly not planning on moving. The stipulation in question states that if I sign a 24 month lease I must occupy the apartment for a minimum of 12 months. I have only been here for 6. Is it possible to break the lease still with this stipulation? Am I protected under some law for job transfers?

Re: Can job relocation break my lease?

Sorry, no contract law exceptions for breaking leases in event of relocating to another state due to a job transfer. You can look into either subleasing the apartment or talking to your apartment manager about breaking the lease earlier. Maybe you can negotiate a compromise. Or, maybe your company will assist you with your obligation with respect to the lease since they want you to transfer.
