Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Michigan

Hysterectomy

My sister in law had a hysterectomy due to cancer. For a year following the surgery she told the doctor that she had severe abdominal pain, the doctor wouldn't even prescribed pain killers and told her it would take time to heal. She eventually went to a doctor at the University of Michigan who questioned the size of the incision for her body size and recommended physical therapy and prescribed muscle relaxers three times a day. Unfortunately her husband lost his job and insurance and the state would only cover her insurance if she paid $400/mo. She has limited mobility and is limited in how much weight she can lift (5lbs.). Her disability claim is pending review. I'm hoping that she may have some kind of chance at a legal suit, at least to cover her medical costs. Does she have a chance?

Re: Hysterectomy

Are you talking about a medical malpractice lawsuit against the physician who performed her surgery? You'd have to set up a consultation with a medical malpractice lawyer to review your case and decide if it has any merit, or enough merit to be worth pursuing. Med mal cases require the employment of experts, which are very costly, and therefore, med mal lawyers in Michigan generally only take on cases that are worth at least $200,000.

If you need a referral to a med mal lawyer, please contact the State Bar of Michigan's referral hotline for some names and numbers.

Good luck.
