Legal Question in Personal Injury in Michigan

Auto and Estate

My grandparents were involved in an auto accident which another drive had caused on August 31, 2005. This resulted in the death of that driver and injuries to my grandparents. We contacted an attorney (hired him, in October) he investigated the accident and all that good stuff. The deceased drivers estate was opened and closed during this time. How long does it take to reopen the estate? My grandfather has since passed away due to cancer and my grandmother is still dealing with the injuries and complications from the accident. She is not doing well and is worried that should she pass away before the suit is completed that the suit will be stopped and not completed. I live with her and we are trying to pay off the house and truck. Heaven forbid should she pass, could I continue the suit? Or would it stop with her passing?
