Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

Double Dipping

I signed a one year lease about 3 years ago and I fell on hard times and after 3 months was evicted.I went to live with friends and even my parents for a while till my situation improved.Since I left no forwarding address (since I didnt even know where I was going to live) I never got a court notice about the apartment company suing me for the full balance of the lease.Which I got served papers at work for when the judgement was determined and now they are garnishing my wages.Thing is they rented my apartment 3 months later.I have no problem paying the balance of the 90 days I didnt pay and even the 90 days it took them to rent the apartment out but they want over 12,000 dollars when I feel I should only owe about half that since they rented the apartment out.I think in michigan it is not legal to double dip like this and I am wondering if I should hire and attorney and fight to reduce this 12,000 dollars they want or would it even be worth the time effort and money.

Re: Double Dipping

You have the choice of challenging the order or filing for bankruptcy. Did you lease inform you that you must leave a forwarding address?
