Legal Question in Social Security Law in Michigan

chronic fatigue

I have been doctoring for extreme exhaustion for about two years. My doctor is not willing to consider the possibility of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. My psychiatrist and therapist are currently helping me research that possibility as being the main cause of my secondary depression.

I have been unsuccessful finding a doctor in my area or even in my health care plan (they told me they don't know of a doctor in our system that specializes in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). I live about 1/2 mile from Ann Arbor, Michigan.

My question to you is, do you know if my psychiatrist (an M.D.) can give me the diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and if so would Social Security Disability and my long-term disability through my previous employer accept that diagnosis from a psychiatrist (or does it HAVE to come from a medical doctor who is treating me)?

I would appreciate any suggestions you might be able to give me. I suspect I may have to have an attorney to help me through this frustrating process, yet without the help of the medical profession I feel very frustrated/lost and even more exhausted.

Thank you again for your time.

Re: chronic fatigue

Your psychiatrist can diagnose you but we suggest finding another general internist. There are a few people we may suggest.

As far as obtaining ssd, it depends on the severity of your condition and your age. A lawyer would be helpful in the event you are denied.
