Legal Question in Social Security Law in Michigan

loss of disability benifits

I am asking on behalf of my sister who is on disability and wishes to get married. Is it true that she will lose her benifits? She was told by one SS worker no and then at a later time she was told by a different SS worker yes.

Re: loss of disability benifits

It depends on what type of disability benefit she is receiving. If she is receiving regular disability benefits based upon her own earnings, then marriage will not affect it. If she is receiving widow's benefits from a deceased husband, then marriage will not affect it. If she is receiving SSI benefits, then her marriage may affect it depending upon her spouse's income. It is hard to be more specific without knowing what type of benefits she is receiving from SSA.
