Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

How does a 17 yr old boy obtain an advocate? He is feelinga that at this age he should be able to have some say regarding visits. The divorce has given them joint custody and has been in place since he was about 12. The situation with his mother is not good (boarders on abusive). He has been diagnosed as Bi-Polar and is in therapy to deal with this and his relationship with mom. He is no longer coping with extended visitations with her. The last extended one resulted with him being admitted to a local mental facility (hearing voices, aggression and rage, suicidal thoughts, etc.). How do I help him? His IEP Advisors have recommended that he have a conservator or guardian when he turns 18. He has asked me to do this but in the mean time can he get an advocate:
