Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

My friends mother passed away in 2015, her estate hasn't been closed yet as there is a pending estate which, we believe, was their grandma's.... In Dec. '15 or Jan. '16, for a reason we aren't sure of, their mother's bank released a check to all of the 5 people in the will individually for $4,000-some-odd each. When the bank had the checks ready my friend wrote the bank and gave them permission to release their check to their sister or my brother which they did. The brother was my friends Power of Attorney at the time but after he picked up the check and failed to properly communicate with my friend, they wrote and told the brother to cease any action as my POA and advised him and the lawyer that my father was my POA and to release my check (or money if he cashed my check) to my dad. He refused and has refused since.

What can or should be done to get the money? Do we have to wait for the closing of the estate before we sue for the money that hasn't been passed onto my friend?
