Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

Juvenile Felony

My 14 year old son and a friend have been charged with felony criminal damage to property. They removed light fixture covers from a couple of florescent lights, removed the bulbs (8), and broke the bulbs leaving the covers on the ground. They also pushed out a window which had been previously broken and replaced with plexiglass. The estimates for repair comes to over $1400 and includes 6 light fixtures, 50 light bulbs, and a whole new window. They did not damage the fixtures, only broke about 8 bulbs, and the plexiglas can be replaced in the window frame. I feel the estimate is grossly inflated. Is this normal? We cannot afford an attorney and have not had any experience with the courts before. What do we do?

Re: Juvenile Felony

He needs a good defense lawyer. Apply for the public defender. You can challenge the amount of loss claimed. The more important issue may be whether he will get a juvenile record for a felony or other delinquency.
