Joint legal custody

What are my rights to my children as a father having joint legal custody?

Your question has many facets to it. Perhaps too many to address each one here. As you know there is a difference between legal custody and physical custody.

Legal custody is the right to participate in the decision making process regardinglegal issues such as medical care, schooling, religious upbringing. If you share legal custody, these decisions must be discussed between the parents and decided on together. If there is a dispute, it may be resolved through mediation or by bringing a motion.

Even without legal custody or physical custody you have the right to receive medical records and school records and other information important to your children.

Contact is usually spelled out as part of a visitation of parenting schedule. If that does not exist, or is insufficient, it may be readdressed in mediation or court.
