They are both poor choices. However, a criminal charge for forgery creates a permanent criminal record which can also result in lengthy prison sentences, fines, and affect future employability.

Criminal contempt may result in jail time and have a similar impact on a criminal record.

Civil contempt may result in jail sentences that compel compliance with court orders.
