under what reasons can a landlord break a lease?

we were aproached by a gentleman in our former rental dwelling, he wanted someone to move into his rental property, farm, to care for his hogs in return for free rent and elec, with the promise that we would be able to purchase this farm on a contract for deed in a few months.now we received an eviction notice, and his reason is he says,personal, is this legal? we have had many problems with him,andwant our day in court.how and what should we do? we must represent ourselves.

If you had nothing in writing, you had a month to month rental, which can be terminated upon proper notice. Neither party has to have a reason, they just get to. Next time get it in writing and have a lawyer look at it before you sign. Good luck.
